First Snow!

Back porch
We are having a little bit of snow. Nothing like those back East are dealing with. But it still counts as snow!

Birthday Hearts

On the back

This year I had challenged a couple of friends to finish UFO's. Twelve for the year. I did pretty well at the start. Then I had a couple of new projects with deadlines come up.  So in the last couple of months I only got one done, So I am at 7 for the year. Time to catch up. This little quilt top was given to me by my daughter more than 10 years ago. She had taken an applique class and this was the class project. She gave  me the top and said you quilt it! Happy Birthday to me! This recently made its way up to the top of the pile. The fabric that I was going to use for the back wasn't big enough and so I found I had this heart print that would work well. I got it pin basted yesterday and hopefully this week it will get quilted in between the new work that has deadlines and can't be shown publicly yet.

Speaking of not being able to show publicly, a project from last year can now be shown! This is part of the Beatles project and this photograph my friend Kaye took at Houston a couple of days ago. What a thrill to have a piece in the show!

My quilt is "Twist and Shout" and I talked about it last week on this post.

Springville Quilt Show

Last Friday we stopped at the Springville Art Museum on our way to the lake. I had entered 2 quilts in the show and was not able to attend the opening. I did not win a ribbon, but two of my friends did win ribbons!
Florence's Egypt quilt!
I have known Florence for a lot of years! She is a wonderful friend and mentor! We are teaching together in September.

Nan's Quilt
I have only known Nan for a couple years now. She is in my former Salt Lake Quilt group. She does fabulous applique! I am looking forward to getting to know her better.

Anne's Agave Landscape
Anne and I have know each other for a long time, way before either of us got into quilting. We met at the pool where our daughters were swimming on the same team.
Canyon Breezes by Anne
This is the piece that Anne made from our challenge fabrics! I love it! I wrote about the challenge in this recent post

Green Valleys By Lisa Chin
Odin my challenge piece
Here is my challenge piece. I had this idea of a boat. I am really not happy with the burlap border and that will come off when the show is over. I named the piece "Odin" because that is the name my Dad always used to name all his sailboats.

Accidental Star by Lisa

I met Lisa  when I was still in California. She was the newsletter editor for my Salt Lake group at the time and emailed me the newsletters. I had emailed her to tell her she was doing a great job and we started up an email conversation. It was a couple of years before I actually met her in person. She has become one of my dearest friends! She started the Star quilt at a retreat we both taught at in March. I knew she had altered it from the original configuration and I loved seeing it in person!

Rainbow Utah

Me with my quilt
I was pleased that this piece was accepted into the show. We were going through the show quickly and almost couldn't find it in the museum. I did not go into that hallway at first.  Please note, all the quilts have this top flop over thing going on (except for those small quilts on rods) because of the way they hang the quilts in this show. You have to put on a strip on the back that has a loose edge and they thumbtack the loose edge to the wall.

This is my Off the Wall post for this week!

Small Town Quilt Show

Every Memorial weekend our small town of Ephraim, UT puts on Scandinavian Festival. The town was settled by Mormon Pioneers from Scandinavian countries. Our little quilt group puts on a quilt show in conjunction with the festival. It is a non-judged event with Viewer's choice awards. Letting everyone (including kids and husbands) vote gets them involved in looking at the quilts. I spent 4 hours helping hang the show today. Here are some photographs of the quilts. Sorry about the bad lighting, lots of sun shining through the windows. The price you pay for a sunny day!

We hang a clothesline along the railing for small qults

Horseshoe Mountain Quilt Guild raffle quilt
Each year the other local quilt guild, The Horseshoe Mountain QG, make a raffle quilt. They raise funds to give a scholarship to a student at the local Jr. College, Snow College.

Antique quilt

This year we had quite a few antique quilts come in. I love the soft, warm look of the above quilt!

Two more of my quilts.

Another Old quilt

Detail of a mend

Interesting choice of  fabric

The center square

Another mend
The above piece really intrigued me. It was made from denim and heavy pant fabrics. The gentleman who brought it in didn't know who made it, but suspected it was a family member. It was found in a family sheep camp (sheepherder's trailer) underneath some boxes or something like that. I love log cabin designs and this is definitely the intended design. It weighs a ton and is hand quilted.

Crazy Quilt

Crazy quilt Story
The gentleman who brought in the sheepherder's quilt also brought in the Crazy quilt above. He bought it at a Hollywood Estate sale. He said he has a photograph from the show of Robert Young with this quilt on his lap, but he couldn't find it to hang with the quilt.

Vintage Sue blocks
These are vintage blocks that someone sashed with modern repro prints and had the quilt machine quilted.

Another Older quilt, probably early 1990's

Back side of Aisle 2

Back Wall

Lovely stars.

Noah's ark

Vintage quilt top, recently quilted by a mother and then bound by her daughter

Quilt back, just as pretty as the front

Quilt front, just as lovely as the back

I would guess from the 1980's

Beautiful wool quilt

Nice sampler

It was an exhausting day, but I really think that the show looks nice! So if you are anywhere near Central Utah in the next two days (Friday or Saturday) stop by and check it out!
